SATURN SQUARE URANUS
FROM THE WEEKAHEAD NOVEMBER 14 1999: With Mercury retrograde it may be a good idea to reflect on the cycle of Uranus/Saturn as we are in the midst of the Saturn-Uranus square right now. The first Uranus-90-Saturn was July 18th, just before JFK Jr crashed down with his plane. The 2nd Uranus-Saturn square is right now, November 14th, and the final Uranus-square Saturn will be May 13, 2000. Thus the symbolism of Uranus in square to Saturn is in effect for almost 10 months, a little over the gestation period of 9 months, at the end of which we are likely to taste the fruits of the efforts we make in this process.
But WHAT IS THE PROCESS of Uranus-90-Saturn beyond all kinds of things like earthquakes, planecrashes, and general upsets in the weatherpatterns? These upsets are reflective of inner upsets, often of inner insecurity. However, to really understand this phase of the Uranus-Saturn square we must go back to its beginnings. Each planetary pairing (two planets coming together, as seen from Earth), starts and is part of a cycle of energy. Each cycle of energy has a beginning (the root), a middle (the 3 or even 7 other phases), and an ending (the result, and the finals of the cycle, a new one will begin thereafter). Usually it is not until midway during the cycle that we start to become conscious of what is really happening. Midway during the cycle will however be when Uranus and Saturn are opposite one another, which is years from now. We are in the first quarter phase as it were, a square which is full of inner tension, but also manifestation "for real".
However, what ARE these tensions, and what is it that is to be manifested "for real"? Many interpretations are valid, but one which I personally find very valid is to look at the symbolism of what happened during the root, the beginnings of this cycle, when Uranus conjuncted Saturn in 1988. You see, the Uranus/Saturn cycle is 45 years, the previous conjunction was early on in World War II and was the start of what could be considered the "cold war", which peaked at the opposition phase early in the sixties. In 1988 the "cold war" ended, and the new cycle was incredibly warm, it even reflected in tropical weather over here during the early years of the new Uranus/Saturn cycle....
Saturn is things like responsibility, security, rules and regulations and conscience. Uranus is things like freedom and individuality. What happened for many people in Eastern Europe was that the rules and the regulations gave way, and the Authorities No Longer where the Rulers and Regulations. A whole new idea of taking responsibility for one's own life started. And this is as far as I can see, the real thing that happened for many. I do not live in Eastern Europe, but in general many people in the first years after 1988 over here also (Western Europe) where confronted with insecurity, grand scale, jobs that were secure before, no longer where secure. The start of a cycle reveals potentiality. If the potential is a totally new (Uranus) idea about responsibility (Saturn), choosing oneself one's own responsibilities and not being told by outer institutions, however safe that may have been, is what potentially was learned. The outer structures gave way so that new structures could be build freely and willingly from the inside.
Bringing this potential over to the present phase of the square between Uranus and Saturn: we see the same thing happening all over again for many people. Not for those who enjoy being reponsibile towards themselves and feeling creative and free here. But many people are now "in between" choices: the choice of choosing for freedom and where one's heart lies (Uranus) or the choice for security and safety (Saturn). The DIFFERENCE between the conjunction and this first square right now is no longer a FORCED change, the tension is coming from within ourselves! (We have moved onwards a bit in the cycle!) Some of us are stuck in jobs we dont like but fear the insecurity of what we really want. And this is what is creating the tension right now. The cycle has been brought one step further, will we manifest for real what we believe in right now, will we choose to enter as it were the new millennium by consciously making choices and taking responsibility for our own lives and no longer lean on securities from others so far or will we choose the safe route? This last choice is the one creating tension. It is no longer a good idea to trust outer security because the entire potential and goal of this new Uranus/Saturn cycle which started in 1988, is to learn to listen within.
It is incredibly interesting to find that Saturnian groups of people have probably invited much more freedom into their lives, whereas Uranian groups of people (astrologers) have for a part invited much more Saturn into their lives: but some of them, many of them, have invited what I call a new (Uranus) "outer" Saturn: new outer structures, like getting astrology "respected" in the outer world. That is not the potential of this cycle. The potential is freedom from outer rules and regulations for the simple reason that one freely and willingly accepts the messages of the inner conscience, the inner and truer rules and regulations. It is a lot more difficult, as it is so easy to get confirmation from outer authorities. But it is not fulfilling and not in tune with real freedom: the freedom to go along with and choose what you know inside is right, not what others tell you. This is the potential of Uranus and Saturn, they are square right now. 70% of the people will create new structures simply because this is also a reflection of Uranus/Saturn. But a few are fulfilling the purpose and goal of this cycle of Uranus/Saturn. It is your own choice.
In The Practice of Astrology Dane Rudhyar wrote how specific transits in the sky can be perfect for certain groups of individuals and more difficult for others. In general you see, those people BORN in a specific phase of the Uranus-Saturn cycle will be more themselves and feel better than those who do not have an aspect between Saturn and Uranus. When the current transits REPEAT aspects in your natal chart, your own birthpotential comes to the fore at such highly charged moments through time! As far as the Uranus-Saturn cycle is concerned: if you were born around 1942, 1952, 1965/66, 1976/76 or in 1988 (give or take an orb of 9 months), this is YOUR time, a timeframe where your own birthpotential can manifest much stronger!
