Njord
Njord
is a one of the Vanir gods. His
first marriage was with his sister Nerthus with whom
he had two children, Frey and Freya.
His second wife was the Giantess Skadi (Skade).
Njord
is the God of the wind, sea and the trade at sea. Njord
was invoked before journeys at sea, hunting and fishing.
One
of the stories around Njord, is about how the marriage between
Njord and Skadi was realized. As compensation for the death
of Skadi´s father Thjatsi (Tjatse), the gods decided
to let her choose a husband from among them. She had to
pick her new husband based only on the appearance of his
feet. She picked Njord by mistake, assuming his feet belonged
to Balder.
Njord
and Skadi could not agree on where to live. She didn't like
his home Noatun at the Sea, and he didn't like hers
Trymheim, in the mountain with large woods and wolves,
so they lived the first half of the year in Noatun and the
other half in Trymheim.
Njord
didn´t go down in the final battle at Ragnarök.
He returned to Vanaheim before
the catastrophe.
