Easa 20(00)
The 20th edition of the yearly Assembly will be a duo-organisation of Belgium and The Netherlands. Why those two countries? Is it because both countries are organising the Europacup (football!!!!); because of the good spirit among the Belgians and the Dutchmen during the passing easa's; because both countries are having the disposal of two leading harbours in Europe?
No, there is more
|
| Theme
During the passing years, no easa was organised in a big city. As inhabitants of the most populated countries of Europe our choice was obvious to give it a chance and a challenge.
We choose for Antwerp and Rotterdam, both not capitals, bus very important economical harbour cities. The link with water seems to become a constant for easa locations: easa France was near a lake; in Scandinavia we visited Copenhagen, a little fishing-village, and the Nordic Fjords; Malta was organised on an island and in Greece we were all welcome in Kavala, a provincial town with a peninsula.
What's the meaning of the water this year? If we look back into history we get to know that the sea is the most defining anchor between Antwerp and Rotterdam. Besides, there exist town-planning drawings to consider the harbours of Antwerp and Rotterdam as one unit.
For easa 20(00) the water is the bearer of the whole network. The importance of water as a theme, as a discussion point, has grown since the enormous mobility of our society. Imagine what will happen with cities trying to conquer a little place in the network. Can we measure the subjection of those cities to globalisation? Can we say that, the way cities are trying to go back to their local identity is truly specific? Maybe this is the reason why they all look similar?
The first questions for a discussion are defined. Antwerp and Rotterdam, two harbour cities (both cities within a network) in which the activities are continually moving further away from the centre of the city, will become case studies during two weeks. How will foreign students experience the relationship? Which are the similarities between those two harbour cities? Is there a dissimilarity hidden behind the similarities? We will do the research to the process of globalisation versus localisation, which is obvious in both cases.
(Dis) similarities
The theme is the "coat-rack" of the summer school. With the help of workshops, lectures, tutors, improvisation and personal interpretation the theme will get more meaning. |
| Concrete
Why do we want to be so close to the network, to the water? In the oldest parts of the city we stay on and next to the water. Via the network we will sail from Antwerp to Rotterdam, we will experience the network. The connection with the network will realise the continuity in the easa happening.
Two or three cargo ships will form the platform for the easa activities: dining room, cinema, auditorium, bar, info point, workshops, exhibition room, and library
In the whole context this will stay a constant during two weeks. The sleeping-accommodation will be situated on the quay. We are searching for empty warehouses. |
| Activities
There are three main groups of activities: workshops, lectures and sightseeing.
One can distinguish two kinds of workshops: the conceptual workshops and the practical ones. As said earlier there will be an offer of Belgian and Dutch workshops but also from tutors of the other participating countries.
The lectures are more defined to the theme. By the right "casting" of speakers we wish to involve everybody into the discussion.
For those who want to get to know everything about the Low Lands we will give as much information as possible. During the assembly there will be enough possibilities to visit interesting sites.
Besides all these there are still the "constant values" of an easa assembly: Umbrella (a little newspaper to keep everybody posted about the easa life), evening activities, parties, a bar and a movie
|
| Result
At the end of the first week in Antwerp there will be an exhibition of all the work we have done so for. It's meant for all the inhabitants of the city, for the persons interested
Rottedam here we come!!!! A second exhibition will be held at the end of the second week in Rotterdam afterwards there will be organised a say good-bye party.
After those two weeks it's not yet finished for the organisers. We will publish the Final Report in which the results of the easa experience will be brought together. All participants will receive the book afterwards. The Final Report means more than just a souvenir that can only be understand by those who were there. The Final Report has to be a synthesis, a last reflection of the theme that was represented to you in its embryonic state. In this manner the acquaintance of Antwerp and Rotterdam will not be limited to the group of foreign students. |
| Date
22nd of July - 6th of August |
| The organisation
The organisation is in the hands of a group of Belgian and Dutch students. Every month a meeting takes place in Antwerp or in Rotterdam. This team is responsible for the smoothly proceeding of the assembly, but the National Contacts (NC) supports them. During the IntermediateNationalConactsMeeting (INCM), held for one week in November, one will discuss the theme of the coming easa.
The realisation of the event is depending on the support and co-operation of universities, harbour offices, the authorities, the trade and industry, funds and institutions
The support can be financial but can also be understood in the way of "goodwill".
The event is housed in the foundation EASA 20(00), registered by the Chamber of Commerce with the number 27179445 and a bank account in both countries. |
| The budget
The budget is mounted for an assembly of 450 foreign students and 50 organisers and helpers.
The organisers (12 persons) get an expense allowance ( 2500), for the travels to Antwerp and Rotterdam and for the correspondence for 2 years of work.
We expect paying from the participating countries. Therefore a subdivision is made in separated categories: five groups of countries are paying a percentage of the fee. The total amount of the participating paying will be about 50.000. In case there is money left, it will be donated to the international exchange of architecture, in particular to support the activities of the easa network, as it is written in an included article in the foundation. |
