Apple Modelling Tutorial

In this tutorial you will work with: Spline, Lathe, UVtexture Difficulty: Easy.

Go to the front view and select the draw spline button. Draw a spline like this.

Now click build->Lathe. Fill in: You want to rotate around the Y-axis, and you want the start and end to be closed. Fill in like shown below.

Then Click OK. You will see a mesh, with a black line on it. That black line is the Spline you used. You won't need it any more, so select it and press delete. Now select the object, and click Build->Convert to subdivided.

Go to the Object/Point-Edit mode by clicking the point-edit button. Use arc-rotate to change the view, look around the object to see what you've got. Now rotate till you can see the bottom of the apple quite well. Select these three points.

Now deselect the 'X' and 'Z' buttons of these three at the left side of the screen. Now you can only work vertically. This will prevent you from ruining your apple. Go to the side view, and select the move button. Now move the three points you selected down.

Select 'X' and 'Z' again, so you will be able to work in three dimensions again. Go to the Object/Edit mode by clicking the Object/Edit mode button, the one left to the view edit mode button. Use Arc-rotate to see what your apple looks like.

Now select the Apple and click Edit->hide. It still exists, but you just can't see it any more. Now select the curved spline and draw something like this.

Now click on the red point, it will turn green and a green line will appear. by changing the direction and length of the line, you can change the curve of the spline you just made. You can also do that to the other points.

Then click select and select the spline. Lathe it, but this time you can use as many sections as you like.

Now select the draw modifier button, and draw something like this. Make sure the modifier you are drawing is wider than the object. If the computer asks what kind of modifier you want, select 'bend'. If you must widen the modifier, use the tool.

Now Click the select-button and select both the object and the modifier. Do this by left-clicking on the one, and then right-clicking on the other. If you left-click on an object, you deselect everything and select the object. If you right-click on an object, it doesn't deselect the rest.

Now click Build->Modifiers->Bind modifier. Now you told Anim8or that the modifier should affect that object you selected. Doubleclick the modifier, and fill in 60 degrees as angle.

Click Build->Modifiers->Effect modifier to get rid of the modifier. Click 'Edit->Show all' to show the apple. go to the front view, and if necessary change the size of the apple with or move it with . Now the shape of the apple is complete, but it still needs a texture.

Click the button. A (Probably empty) list of materials will appear. Doubleclick on "NEW" and create a brown material

Now apply it to both objects. that doesn't look well, does it? no. We need a texture for the apple. I will use this one. .(right-click on this image, and "Save as") Create a new material and load Appletext.jpg as texture. If you don't see appletext.jpg, select "jpg" for file type.

Click OK. Select the apple, and click Apply. If you don't see something like below, check the Texture-option in View->Preferences.

This still isn't what we wanted. Go to the side view, select the apple, and click the UV button. You will see something like the arcrotate circle, but now it is yellow. You also can see a yellow rectangle.

The yellow rectangle is your texture. this is the way it will be projected onto your apple. By dragging with the left mouse button outside the circle or inside the circle you can change the angle in two different ways. Using the middle mousebutton (or Alt-right) you can make it smaller or bigger, and with the right mouse button you can move it. Move and rotate it to something like this.

Click the select-button, and use arc-rotate to see if the apple is good enough. Rotate to a nice view and click File->render Preview. Set the back color to blue or something like that (Grey is so boring) and click 'OK'. The computer will now create a bitmap of your apple. It may look a bit different from what you saw earlier, thats because Anim8or will try to create a high quality picture. You can use the Save button at the left of your screen to save it.
