Chapter 25

His arms reached up to catch her as she let go of the headboard and collapsed on top of him. The residue from the jelly made their bodies stick lightly to each other. Carefully, he rolled her over onto her back and laid on his side to look at her. "God, you're beautiful."

"Oh yeah... I bet I am right now."

He chuckled and propped himself up on his elbow. "I think so."

"You're sweet..."

"It's the jelly... speaking of which..." He changed his tone to one that could only be described as mock irritation. "You used all of my apple jelly." He held up the empty squeeze bottle as evidence.

With a hint of sarcasm in her voice, she replied. "I'll buy some more tomorrow. God knows you can't eat toast without apple jelly." She couldn't help but smile at him. "Besides, you weren't complaining at the time."

He returned her smile. "I'm not complaining now." He ran his fingers over her sticky skin and grinned.

"What?"

His tongue running over her flesh was her answer. "Oh shit..."

He looked up at her and smiled. His tongue left her skin as he gently kissed her lips. "Take a shower with me?"

She laughed. "You have to ask?"

He climbed out of bed and pulled her up. "I'll change the sheets when we get out of the shower..."

She blushed as she looked at the mess. Clumps of apple jelly, mixed with the fluids from their bodies. He watched her reaction and smiled. Gently lifting her face to his, his whispered, "You're cute when you blush."

"Fuck you."

He laughed. "Just did... give me a few minutes, okay?"

She playfully pushed him towards the bathroom.

She helped him change the sheets and he carried the dirty ones to the laundry room. When he walked back to the living room, he found her sitting on the couch looking at her ring. He sat down beside her, wondering what she was thinking. "You okay?"

"Hm? Yeah... it's just..." She looked into his eyes and he saw her tears.

"Sara?" His voice was tinted with worry.

She slowly shook her head to let him know it was okay. "It's just... we're really going to do this aren't we?"

He exhaled heavily and smiled as he took her hands in his. "Yes... we are."

"Gil?"

"Yeah?"

"I know that you worry about passing on otosclerosis to your children..." She watched as his eyes dropped to the floor. "Hey... look at me."

He looked back up at her request and it was her turn to see his tears. "Gil... I also know that you want children."

He swallowed and nodded. "Yeah, I do..."

She smiled at him. "So do I, you know."

He returned her smile. "It gives us something else to think about, doesn't it?"

"Yeah... but I've done some research..." She watched as he raised an eyebrow at her.

"Now who's being all scientific?" He grinned.

"It's just... well... treatment has come so far since your mother was diagnosed... think about how much farther it could go by the time our children are your age."

His grin widened slightly. "What are you trying to say Sara?"

She took a deep breath and gazed into his eyes. "I want to have your children, Gil. I want to be a mother. I mean... not necessarily right now... but... you know... eventually... within the next couple of years..."

His hand brushed her hair back. "I'd do anything for you Sara..."

She cocked her eyebrow at him. "Anything?" He recognized the mischief in them.

He chuckled nervously. "Um... we're talking about kids right now, aren't we?"

"Um... yeah... actually we are... my mind just kind of... drifted for a minute."

He leaned over and kissed her. "Give me some time, okay? There are some things we need to discuss about the other matter before I... well... we..." He cleared his throat and saw the smile in her eyes. He knew that she knew he was wearing down. "I'm serious Sara... I have a lot of concerns about that... and... well... I'm just not ready for that right now..."

Her hand ran through his curls as she smiled. "Nick asked me this morning when we're getting married."

He smiled at her segue. "What did you tell him?"

"That we hadn't discussed that yet."

He pulled her legs into his lap and gently rubbed her feet. Looking back at her, he sighed. "I'll marry you right now, if you want."

"What?"

"I would... you pick the date... I'll be there."

She smiled broadly at him. "I love you."

His fingers suddenly tickled the soles of her feet, laughing as she struggled against him. "Yeah... I know." He leaned over her and laid his head on her chest, listening to her heartbeat. "I love you too."

"Gil?"

"Hmm?"

"I was wondering something."

"What's that honey?"

"How would you feel if I came off the pill?"

He could sense the nervousness in her voice. He looked up at her and smiled. "Happy." He kissed her lips and yawned before laying his head back down on her chest. "Very happy."

She wrapped her fingers in his hair and smiled as she felt his breathing pattern change. She glanced at her ring and grinned before closing her eyes. She fell into a peaceful slumber with him. His head on her chest, her fingers in his hair, their hands linked together. His words echoed in her head 'you pick the date... I'll be there.' She smiled in her sleep.
