Chapter 55

They walked through the front doors of the CSI building and signed in, before heading to the elevator. Hearing a small laugh, he turned to look at her.

"What's so funny?"

She shook her head and smiled. "Aaron would be so proud?"

The confusion shone in his eyes. "Aaron? Why?"

The elevator door opened and she walked in, waiting for the doors to close before she answered him.

"Because... we were able to make it through our shower without further incident."

He looked at her in mock-irritation. "Sara... are you EVER going to let me live that down?"

She leaned over and placed a soft kiss on his cheek. "Of course, I am..."

"Good!"

"Just not anytime soon."

She poked him in the ribs and exited the elevator, walking quickly down the hall.

"Hey..."

She turned to look at him with a smile on her face. "Yeah?"

"Where are you going?"

"Trace... I'll be there if you need me."

He nodded and watched her as she turned and continued on her way. He smiled to himself as he walked to his office.

He closed the file he was working on and glanced at the clock. Thirty minutes before the others show up. He quickly decided to go find Sara.

He found her easily enough. Leaning over a table, looking at the photographs from the previous night's case. He walked up behind her, placing his right arm around her and resting his hand on her stomach.

"Find anything?"

She sighed heavily and leaned back into him. "No... nothing... it HAS to be here, I'm just missing it."

He laid his chin on her shoulder and inhaled deeply, breathing in her scent. "You're looking too hard, you know that..."

Her hand covered his on her belly as his fingers splayed out across her abdomen. "I know... it's just..."

His head shifted slightly and he placed a soft kiss on her neck. "I know, it's driving you crazy."

His soft chuckle brought a smile to her face. "Yeah, it is."

She leaned further back against him and sighed as his hand gently caressed her stomach. Her voice dropped to a whisper. "You remember the doctor's appointment, right?"

"Of course, I do... 8:30... Dr. Herrero's office." His left hand gently stroked her arm. "I wouldn't miss it for the world, Sara."

She exhaled the breath she had been holding. "Good... because... I'm a little nervous."

He smiled against her skin. "So am I. Nervous, petrified, elated... so many different emotions are running through my system right now. But... I know one thing..."

She turned to look at him. "What's that?"

He grinned and tenderly kissed her lips. "You're going to be a wonderful mother."

She smiled, her tension eased slightly.

She looked back down at the photographs. "Now... .where were we?"

~*~

She stood in the doorway, watching them. She wasn't trying to eavesdrop. Even if she were, she wouldn't be able to... they were speaking in hushed tones. But, that's not what caught her attention.

It was the way he was standing there. His arm around her waist. His hand across her stomach... almost... protectively.

It was the way her hand joined his. Holding his hand to her abdomen. The way she leaned back into him. The way their hands caressed her belly in unison.

She thought back over the past few days. Sara's eating habits... more importantly, the foods that Sara had been choosing to eat. Nothing too odd, but... unusual for Sara. A slow smile crept across her face. She leaned against the doorframe and watched them.

She wondered briefly if she should ask... or... if she should wait until they felt the time was right to let everyone know.

It was in her nature to ask. But, then again... Grissom and Sara were both extremely private people.

She sighed heavily in thought... a little louder than she actually meant to. She smiled as Grissom glanced towards the door.

~*~

He whispered softly in her ear. "I love you Sara."

She smiled and held his hand tightly against her belly. "I love you too, Gil."

His ears registered a sound. A quick glance towards the door revealed the origin of that sound.

He lifted his head from Sara's shoulder, but his hand remained where it was. "Hey Catherine..."

Sara turned to look towards the door and tightened her grip on Grissom's hand.

Catherine smiled at the redness forming on their faces.

Slowly, she entered the room and took a seat on the stool at the corner of the table. Taking a deep breath, she looked at them and smiled.

Taking a quick glance at their hands, her smile widened. "So... I guess congratulations are in order..."

Sara's hand left her stomach, but Grissom's never flinched. It stayed there... caressing, protecting his unborn child. A grin spread across his flushed face.

"Um... yeah... we were going to wait until we saw the doctor tomorrow before we told everyone."

Sara nervously ran a hand through her hair and reached out with her foot to drag a stool over to her. Grissom automatically grabbed the stool with his left hand and brought it to her. Catherine smiled at them both as Sara sat down and leaned back against his chest.

"So... how far along are you?"

Sara bit her lip momentarily before answering with a quiet "I'm not sure..."

Catherine nodded in understanding. "Who's your doctor?"

"Rebecca Herrero... I've heard she's good... do you know of her?"

Catherine grinned at the nervousness in Sara's answer. "Yes... and she is a wonderful doctor."

Grissom placed a gentle kiss on the top of Sara's head. "See? I told you... everything is going to be fine."

Catherine looked concerned for a moment. "Have there been problems or..."

Sara quickly shook her head. "No... just first-baby jitters..."

Grissom laughed softly. "For both of us."

"Well... just my opinion... but, I happen to think that the two of you are going to be wonderful parents."

She laughed as Grissom blushed deeply and Sara's smile broadened.

Suddenly something occurred to Grissom. "Catherine?"

"Yeah?"

"Um... was there something you needed... or... were you just checking up on us?"

She laughed loudly. "No... I wasn't checking up on you... actually, Warrick was looking for you. He said that he had stopped by your house for some advice, but that you had a headache..."

Grissom cleared his throat. "Yeah... it was... pretty intense there for a while... I couldn't... concentrate on what he was asking."

"Feeling better now?"

"Um... yeah... actually I am. I laid back down for a little while... and... it seems to have eased off quite a bit."

"So..."

"So?"

"You think you might be able to help Warrick out?"

"Oh... yeah..." He leaned down and placed a quick kiss on Sara's cheek. "I'll see you in a bit."

She grinned up at him and winked. She sighed heavily as she watched him leave the room.

"So... what time is your appointment tomorrow?"

"8:30..."

Catherine smiled at her. "I was a nervous wreck when I found out I was pregnant. But... after the first doctor's appointment, it gets better."

Sara returned her smile. "Ready to get to work?"

"Yeah... let's go. The busier you are, the quicker the time will go by... ."

They shared a hearty laugh as they exited the lab in search of their assignments.
