Legacy of Kain timeline

THIS TIMELINE CONTAINS MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR EVERY SINGLE LEGACY OF KAIN GAME.

Timeline A is the timeline in which William the Just was not murdered. It is unknown how this timeline would have played out after the battle of the Last Stand. The Nemesis would probably have conquered Nosgoth, preventing Kain’s empire from ever existing. If this is true, it also prevents the wraith Raziel from ever existing, which causes a very weird paradox because the Soul Reaver exists in this timeline, and Janos was murdered, in which Raziel was revealed to play a part in Soul Reaver 2.

As is noted in the series, though, history will attempt to correct itself as much as it can after a paradox has occurred. It is therefore likely that Raziel’s circular destiny did exist in this timeline, although possibly in a very different form.

In Timeline B, William is murdered. This causes a Vampire genocide. Oddly, Kain still has memories from timeline A. This timeline allows Kain’s empire, Raziel and the Soul Reaver to exist, and makes the murder of Janos possible. Raziel kills Kain at the Sarafan Stronghold in this timeline, and thus gets absorbed by the Reaver in the Sarafan era. The Hylden remain locked in the Demon Dimension.

Timeline C was created by the events in Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance. Kain is purified and the Hylden escape from the Demon Dimension, allowing Blood Omen 2 to exist. These events do not seem to have changed the events of Soul Reaver, as Raziel’s memory does not change and Turel confirms the events of Soul Reaver.

Out of necessity, a project like this contains some educated guesses. Not everything is spelled out clearly in the games, especially with regards to some of the events in Blood Omen 2, for obvious reasons. Below the timeline itself are a few justifications for my assumptions.

Ancient times * Nosgoth inhabited by Humans, Ancient Vampires and Hylden. * Construction of the Hylden City, Vampire Citadel and Eternal Prison. * Possibly construction of the Lost City. * Ancients worship Elder God and the Wheel of Fate. The Hylden reject these teachings, causing the Ancients to start a war.
Milennia pass * Ancients and Hylden are still at war. * A Hylden known as the Builder constructs the Device beneath the place where Meridian will one day be and creates the Mass. Before its completion, however, he is sent to the Eternal Prison. * The Ancients banish the Hylden to the Demon Dimension and set the Pillars as the lock that binds them. A Hylden known as the Seer escapes the binding, Vorador is possibly involved. Vampire Guardians are appointed. * Just before being sealed away, the Hylden put a blood curse on the Ancients, causing vampirism, sterility and immortality. The Elder God stops speaking to the Ancients. Unable to bear the separation, many commit suicide. * The blood curse is passed on to the human Vorador, turning him into a Vampire. * Vorador forges the Reaver blade, after which it is enchanted by the Ancients. Janos Audron is appointed Reaver Guardian until their savior will arrive to wield it. * Possibly creation of the Balance Emblem and Nexus Stone. * Pillar Guardians chosen at birth. The ancients adopt, and where necessary, abduct them and turn them into Vampires when they come of age. This continues for an unknown time until the Guardians revolt, led by Mortanius and Moebius, who has become a servant of the Elder God. The Humans seize the Pillars as their own. * In the following centuries, the Ancients die out until only Janos remains. The Binding decays.
Centuries pass (Sarafan era) Timeline A * Vampire population increases, drawing the attention of the Circle of Nine. The Sarafan is formed, led by Malek, Guardian of Conflict. Construction of the Sarafan Stronghold. * Humans Raziel, Turel, Dumah, Rahab, Zephon and Melchiah ascend through the Sarafan ranks to become high inquisitors. ? The Sarafan somehow manage to enter Janos’ dwelling. Human Raziel executes Janos by tearing out his heart. On their return to the Sarafan Stronghold, they take with them the heart of Janos and possibly the Soul Reaver. * Vorador recovers Janos’ body. In mad rage, he invades the sarafan Stronghold and murders the guardians of Mind, Dimension, Nature, Energy, States and Blance. * Malek is punished for not being able to save the killed Guardians. Janos’ heart is christened the Heart of Darkness and is hidden away at Avernus Cathedral. * The Sarafan crusade ceases. ? Soul Reaver not created.	Centuries pass (Sarafan era) Timeline B * Vampire population increases, drawing the attention of the Circle of Nine. The Sarafan is formed, led by Malek, Guardian of Conflict. In mad rage, he invades the sarafan Stronghold and murders the guardians of Mind, Dimension, Nature, Energy, States and Blance. * Wraith Raziel kills Sarafan inquisitors Melchiah, Zephon, Rahab, Dumah, Turel and Raziel. * Raziel is absorbed by the Reaver, creating the Soul Reaver. * Malek is punished for not being able to save the killed Guardians. Janos’ heart is christened the Heart of Darkness and is hidden away at Avernus Cathedral. The Sarafan inquisitors are buried at the Tomb of the Sarafan. * The Sarafan crusade ceases. Raziel slips into the Spectral Realm and is taken captive by the Elder God. Kain takes up the Reaver. * Kain retrieves the broken fragments of the Ancient’s Balance emblem and discovers the Vampire Citadel. He meets the Elder God, who teleports him 500 years into the future, to the hour Raziel arrives in Avernus. * Malek is punished for not being able to save the killed Guardians. Janos’ heart is christened the Heart of Darkness and is hidden away at Avernus Cathedral. The Sarafan inquisitors are buried at the Tomb of the Sarafan. * The Sarafan crusade ceases.
450 years pass Timeline A ? Moebius gives the Soul Reaver to king William the Just. * William the Just will become the Nemesis, and will in the future attempt to conquer the lands of Nosgoth.	450 years pass Timeline BC * Moebius gives the Soul Reaver to king William the Just. * Kain arrives from 50 years into the future, armed with Soul Reaver. 30 years pass (BO era) Timeline A ? Someone (probably Moebius) places the Soul Reaver in Avernus Cathedral. * Elzevir the Dollmaker imprisons the soul of king Ottmar’s daughter into a doll. Ottmar is crestfallen. * The armies of the Nemesis advance to the north. * Mortanius has Kain assassinated, and uses the Heart of Darkness to resurrect him as a Vampire. * Kain kills his assassins, but his quest isn’t over. He meets Ariel at the Pillars, who tells him that he needs to restore the Pillars find a cure for his vampirism. To do so, he must kill the Guardians. * Kain kills Nupraptor. He learns that Malek protects the Circle, so he attempt to kill Malek, but fails. * Kain goes to the Oracle of Nosgoth (Moebius) for aid. He is directed to Vorador. * Kain travels to Dark Eden and confronts the three Guardians. He manages to kill Dejoule and Bane, Anarcrothe escapes. Malek tries to protect them, but is killed by Vorador. ? Kain finds the Soul Reaver in Avernus Cathedral. * Kain kills Azimuth. On her body he finds a time streaming device. * To avert the legions of the Nemesis, king Ottmar must stop him. Kain seeks out Elzevir and kills him, thus returning the soul of Ottmar’s daughter. Kain joins forces with Ottmar. However, Ottmar’s Army of Hope is defeated by the Legions of the Nemesis. Kain uses the time streaming device to escape. He is just in time to witness Vorador’s execution. Kain is now thje last Vampire. Enraged, he kills Moebius. The Elder God probably resurrects Moebius afterwards. * Mortanius calls Kain to the Pillars. Mortanius and Anarcrothe battle at the Pillars, Mortanius is victorious. Hash'ak'gik fully possesses Mortanius and deforms his body. Kain defeats him, Hash'ak'gik’s spirit returns to the Demon Dimension. * Ariel reveals to Kain that he is the Guardian of balance, and the he must sacrifice himself to fully restore the Pillars. At the same time, Kain emerges from the Elder God’s time portal. *Raziel descends into the catacombs under Avernus, where he meets his brother Turel and kills him. He also meets Mortanius. * Kain and Raziel meet in Avernus Cathedral and fight. The Hylden are fueling Raziel’s rage. The battle ends with Raziel tearing Kain’s heart out. Raziel then flings Kain into the Demon Dimension, believing him to be dead. * Vorador is taken captive by Moebius’ mob. Kain returns from 50 years into the past (with memories of the timeline without William’s murder) and discovers that he has ignited a crusade against Vampires. He is just in time to witness Vorador’s execution. Kain is now the last Vampire.Enraged, he kills Moebius. The Elder God resurrects Moebius afterwards. * Raziel resurrects Janos by returning the Heart of Darkness to him. Janos’ teleports them to the Vampire Citadel. Raziel enters the Citadel’s inner chamber, the Spirit Forge. The Wraith blade absorbs Ariel’s soul and is purified. * Mortanius calls Kain to the Pillars. Mortanius and Anarcrothe battle at the Pillars, Mortanius is victorious. Hash'ak'gik fully possesses Mortanius and deforms his body. Kain defeats him. * Ariel reveals to Kain that he is the Guardian of balance, and the he must sacrifice himself to fully restore the Pillars. Kain refuses the sacrifice, damning Nosgoth to an eternity of decay and destroying the Binding. * Hash'ak'gik possesses Janos and battles Raziel. Raziel is defeated and taken captive by the Elder God. Hash'ak'gik goes on to proceed with his plans. * Kain escapes the Demon Dimension and returns to the Vampire Citadel, where he kills Moebius again. Raziel devours Moebius’ soul and uses his body to enter the material realm once more. He purifies again and has himself absorbed by the Reaver, creating the Soul Reaver. Kain battles the Elder God with it and defeats him.

Kain’s champion Magnus attempts to kill the Sarafan Lord, but fails and is sent to the eternal Prison. * At the gates of Meridian, Kain’s army is ambushed. Kain is defeated in mortal combat with the Sarafan Lord. The Sarafan Lord takes the Soul Reaver. * The Sarafan take control of Nosgoth. The Vampires of Meridian unite as the cabal, led by Vorador. * Vorador sires Umah, who will become one of the most important members of the Cabal.

Wile making their way to Sanctuary, the Cabal’s headquarters, they get separated and Kain makes his way alone. Umah gets captured. Kain meets his former soldier Faustus and kills him. * Kain arrives at Sanctuary and joins forces with the Cabal. On his way to set Umah free, he encounters his former soldier Marcus and kills him. Kain then breaks into the Sarafan Keep and frees Umah. He confronts the Sarafan Lord, but is teleported away by Umah. * To get the Nexus Stone, Kain breaks into Meridian’s industrial quarter. He encounters his former ally Sebastian and kills him. He then takes the Nexus Stone. * To learn more of the Sarafan’s plans, Vorador directs Kain to the Seer. He goes to the Seer, followed by the Sarafan Lord who has her house burned down. The Seer teleports kain to the Device. * Kain meets the deformed Janos at the Device. Janos tells Kain that to kill the Mass, he needs the blood of it’s creator and directs Kain to the Eternal Prison. * At the Eternal Prison, Kain meets the Builder. He kills him and absorbs his blood. He also meets Magnus, who has gone insane, and kills him. * Kain traverses the Device and kills the Mass, returning Janos to his original form. Janos joins the Cabal. * Kain and Umah depart for the Hylden City. Umah seizes the Nexus Stone. Kain kills her and reclaims the Nexus Stone. * Kain breaks into the Hylden City and disables the shield protecting it. Vorador and Janos teleport into the Hylden City. * Kain confronts the Sarafan Lord at the Hylden Gate. He drops the Nexus Stone into the gate, destroying it. Janos battles the Sarafan Lord, but is flung into the Demon Dimension. Kain reclaims the soul Reaver and kills the Sarafan Lord. * Kain resumes his conquest of Nosgoth. He crushes the remnants of the vampire resistance and likely kills Vorador.
100 years pass Timeline A * Uncertain.	100 years pass Timeline BC * Kain sets the Balance Pillar as throne of his future empire. He raids the tomb of the Sarafan and raises Raziel, Turel, Dumah, Rahab, Zephon and Melchiah as his Vampiric sons. * Kain and his Vampires begin a conquest of Nosgoth. * As a last stand, the Humans construct a cathedral, which will spread a hymn deadly to Vampires over all of Nosgoth. It is never finished and becomes known as the Silenced Cathedral. * Kain’s empire is established. Kain has Human slaves build the Sanctuary of the Clans and orders the Vampires to belch the sky with smoke, protecting the Vampires from the sun. Kain discovers the Chronoplast and learns the history of Nosgoth.
1000 years pass Timeline A * Uncertain, Kain’s empire likely doesn’t exist.	1000 years pass Timeline BC * Lieutenant Raziel grows a pair of bat-like wings. Seemingly on a jealous whim, Kain has him thrown into the Abyss. * During the following centuries, the Vampire clans mutate. The Melchahim begin to inhabit the Necropolis, the Zephonim take up residence in the Silenced cathedral, the Rahabim inhabit the Drowned Abbey. Dumah is slain by Humans. Raziel’s clan disappears, either died out or moved somewhere else.
Centuries pass (SR era) Timeline A * Uncertain.	Centuries pass (SR era) Timeline BC * Nosgoth is on the brink of collapse. * Human Citadel is the last holdout of the Human is this era. * The Elder God resurrects Raziel as wraith. * Raziel kills his brother Melchiah. * Raziel breaks into the Sanctuary of the Clans and confronts Kain. They battle and the Soul Reaver breaks on Raziel, releasing the Wraith blade, which becomes Raziel’s symbiotic weapon. * Raziel kills his brother Zephon. * Raziel enters the tomb of the Sarafan and discovers his Sarafan heritage. * Raziel kills his brother Rahab. * Raziel resurrects his brother Dumah and subsequently kills him again. * Turel is teleported away to the past by Azimuth. * Raziel descends into the Chronoplast chamber and confronts Kain again. Kain activates the time streaming device and teleports into Nosgoth’s past. Raziel pursues him.

* The Eternal prison has to be constructed before the end of the Ancient – Hylden war because the Builder is imprisoned in it and Janos knows of its existence. The presence of a statue of Moebius indicates his involvement in some way, which is not all that outlandish giving the time manipulation going on there. It is unknown whether he built it (As time guardian, he could easily have traveled back in time to do so.) or later aided them in some way. It is unknown what exactly the Prison’s grand experiment was about and what Moebius had to gain from it. Perhaps a later game will reveal more.

* The being known alternately as the Unspoken, the Dark Entity, the Sarafan Lord and the Hylden Lord is one of the least defined characters of the story. For years, it wasn’t even clear what his real name was. The deity Hash'ak'gik was mentioned in the dark scripture in Avernus Cathedral, but a connection was never confirmed. In Defiance, it turned out that Turel was possessed by a number of Hylden and went by the name Hash'ak'gik. However, interviews by crew unambiguously state that the name properly belongs to the aforementioned being that possessed Mortanius. Presumably he just likes to have his name chanted in fear. Throughout this timeline, I refer to this character as Hash'ak'gik.

* In timeline B and C, Kain never needs King Ottmar’s help. Presumably, the princess’s soul is still imprisoned in the doll.

* Who places the Soul Reaver in Avernus cathedral? In timeline B it is most likely Moebius, as Kain is dead when Raziel is devoured by the Reaver. However, in timeline C the Soul Reaver is created at a different time and the roles are reversed: Moebius is dead and Kain lives.

* It is unclear exactly when Raziel is released in the Blood Omen era, but it is likely just before Kain kills Nupraptor, as the Pillars are shown in their corrupted state and Kain has begun his quest. Kain and Raziel’s encounter in Avernus cathedral is more difficult to pin down. Raziel approaches Avernus while it is in flames, just like the young Kain. So does their battle take place before or after the young kain visits Avernus? Mortanius’ line “Come to the pillars, my undead son” points toward the latter, but it is incorrectly timed, as Mortanius says this in Blood Omen just after Kain kills Moebius, while in Defiance, Raziel meets Moebius one last time before his death.

* As seen in Defiance, Moebius does manage to capture and presumably execute Vorador in timeline C. It is therefore assumed that Kain resurrected him later, as he states in Blood Omen 2 that he can’t make new vampires, but Vorador can. Whether or not Vorador was resurrected in timeline B is an open question. However, in both timelines he appears to be dead (Or possibly hiding) by the time Kain’s empire is established; before he travels through time, Raziel never meets him. The Cabal must also have been destroyed, since all vampires in Kain’s empire were descended from Kain.

* It is an interesting question if Moebius lived in timeline A and B. Presumably the Elder God did resurrect him. Perhaps Moebius is the reason that the Hylden didn’t overrun Nosgoth even after the total destruction of the Binding, as per his statement in Defiane that the Hylden were just a distraction that would be dealt with in time (However, this time he got killed, leading to the young Kain having to stop their invasion).

* The human Umah was originally going to be included in Defiance, presumably in the Blood Omen era. However, unless a future game contradicts this, I will stand by my assessment that Umah was turned during Kain’s sleep following his defeat by the Sarafan Lord.
