D'Gekroonde Bye-korf
(the crowned beehive)
Built in 1687
Amersfoort double ring of concentric canals surrounding a centered market place, clearly identities it as a medieval city. D'Gekroonde Bye-korf overlooks one of these canals. In the classic style of the period, the neck-gable, capped with an arched pediment, is festooned with sculpted garlands, a tradition inspired by the Romans. The gablestone identifying the house depict, two cherubs hold a crown above a beehive. The original owner of the house was a honey purifier. Honey was in regular use by bakers in the 7th century.
