Het Lammeken (The Little Lamb)
Built in 1539
Their joint claims to be the historic home of golf are not the only things the Dutch and the Scots have in common. Other links range from language to architecture. Since Maria Stuart, daughter of James 1 of Scotland, married Wolfaard VI of Borssele in 1444, there have been strong ties between Scotland and the port of Veere in the province of Zeeland. From 1541 to 1795 Veere was Scotland's staple port for European trade in Scottish wool. Het Lammeken was built by a Scottish merchant in 1539 and temains among the finest examples of Late Gothic domestic architecture in the Netherlands. The house remained in the Scottish Cunningham family for many generations. In 1881 the house was sold for 800 guilders to the state for keeping as a monument. It now houses a museum De Schotse Huizen
