Amsterdam
Prinsengracht 969
Built in1690

The Prinsengracht is the outermost of the four concentric canals dug around the city of Amsterdam in the early 1600s They are linked to each other by smaller canals or narrow crossing streets. Lined by over 1,000 canal-houses, the Prinsengracht is also the longest canal in the old centre. Number 969 stands near the point where the canal flows into the River Amstel which is the only natural waterway in the city. The Prinsengracht was home to many manufacturers like barrel-makers, brewers and glass-blowers who were not permitted to locate in the more exclusive residential Herengracht and Keizersgracht. This house has a neck-gable but has lost its pediment. The claw pieces often adorning both sides of a neck-gable, are usually removed from the gable during restoration and can weigh up to 1300 kilos each.
